BBC Camira competition

Basing my collection on Welsh landscapes, I decided to look at nature as if through a microscope with hints of silhouetted plant forms. These designs capture my journey around Wales gathering information on natural forms and surface textures. I have a keen interest in drawing, particularly line and fine details, so this became problematic as I knew these drawings will eventually have to be translated into weave. The idea to look at surface textures as if through a microscope solved this issue, as it enabled me to create patterns that were simplified and that would work as a woven pattern.

When starting the project, I decided I would like to create designs that encapsulate the ‘Kit of Parts’ section of the brief. For example, the area will have a constant flow of people, the area will act as ‘a place to eat’ ‘a place to collaborate’ ‘a place to meet’ etc. I wanted to create designs that will adapt to this environment by creating patterns that portray a sense of movement, energy and flow.

Having researched into the brand Camira, particularly their Transport range, I realised these designs would help me make links between the BBC’s building environment and my designs. Camira’s Transport fabrics all capture motion and flow. With their use of form and composition they have successfully helped me when portraying movement within my designs.

The main colour pallete I have used, consists of blue and grey tones. I chose to use these colours as I feel they do not create a gender specific response in my designs. Also, I feel they can be taken seriously in a work environment whilst still looking playful.

Working on this brief has challenged me to abstract my drawings and work with simplified details. These solutions can be taken from this brief and applied in my drawings in the future to create a well-balanced collection.
